Lullaby

Go to bed now, old man, you are tired.
The day was long
and you certainly put on a show.

You pulled all the weeds in the alley
and began to mow
what we've always called the back forty.

It was not a test
of either your skill or endurance,
but you still need rest.

So sleep now and when you awake
you will find work waiting
if you’re still here on this earth;

or, should you wake up in heaven,
you will find old friends
and you’ll always have something to do.

In heaven, you never get tired.
Everything is new
and need is personally tailored
to the work you do.

So dream tonight of tomorrow,
Build your strength for the jobs that await,
here, where you’ve worked day by day
or, there in heaven.
